Making your house move as stress-free as possible

It is commonly said that moving house can be one of the most stressful events in our lives. Thankfully, moving house does not have to be a chaotic experience filled with unexpected stresses. A little planning can go a long way when it comes to making your move a seamless transition. You have a great new house to live in – why not make your house moving experience as exciting as all of your other new opportunities?

Here are some of our top tips for making moving house a better overall experience.

  • Use good packaging materials – It can be tempting to pop to the nearest greengrocer’s and use whatever boxes they have leftover at the end of the day. After all, these are free! True, but they are also often soggy, mismatched and not meant for transporting household belongings. While you might save some money, using poor quality packing materials could lead to costly damage and lost time. Hardly worth it! Invest in some high-quality packaging materials and you will save yourself time, money and hassle.

  • Outsourcing is your friend – When it comes to our sharing economy, it seems like you can arrange to have any goods or services brought right to your door. Order a professional to your doorstep at an affordable price, so that you can focus your time and energy. Have that creaky step fixed, have a coat of paint slapped on the wall, arrange for an end of tenancy clean – it’s all possible at a good price.

  • Keep, bin, donate, sell – Over the course of a life well lived, we all tend to acquire heaps and heaps of possessions that we no longer need. Old clothes, well-worn books, unused kitchen gadgets – they can all make moving house a nightmare. Before you start the actual packing process, go through the rooms in your house and separate things into four categories: Keep, bin, donate, sell. A good rule is that if you haven’t used it for 6 months, you probably don’t need it!

  • Hire a reputable removals company – Once your items are packaged up, ensure they’re transported as efficiently and safely as possible. Get in touch with our team to arrange your house removal quote; we are proud members of the professional movers association and consistently get excellent customer feedback, so you can be assured that when you book a move with us, you’re in safe hands.

  • Save you time and waste – Apps like Olio or Freecycle are great for listing items that you want to give away. Listing items on a site like eBay might help you make some money towards your move and items for your new home too! While you might want to give your best second-hand donations to the charity shop, what are you going to do with that half-filled jar of gherkins or the pile of magazines that you don’t want to throw in the bin? They’re perfectly good, but you don’t want to haul them to your new home. List your item on an app like Olio, and someone in your neighbourhood is sure to snap it up right away and even come to your home to pick it up. Talk about removal services on a micro scale!

Enjoy the experience as much as you can – you have a new home to move into!
